Transcription: The ultrasound scanner is a development of ASDIC, Sonar and the German Fischlooper designed originally for underwater detection and location. In the seventies the electronics firm Kelvin Hughes accepted an assignment to design a safe method of prenatal examination. X-ray being ruled out as it could endanger the unborn child. More recently ultrasound has been used for blood clot and cardiac condition examinations. Such examinations can be of long duration, and the total absence of harmful radiation makes ultrasound the ideal medium.
